abortifacient: Any chemical agent that induces abortion.
abortion: The ending of a pregnancy and expulsion of the contents of the uterus. This can occur either by induction or spontaneously (when it is known as a miscarriage).
abstinence: To refrain from having sex.
acculturation: The process of adapting to a society by incorporating the beliefs, behaviors and customs of that culture.
acquired immune deficiency syndrome: A disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The disease involves weakening of the immune system until it is unable to fight opportunistic infections.
acrosomal reaction: The release of enzymes from a sperm's acrosome.
acrosome: The covering of the head of the sperm that contains enzymes that allow it to penetrate the ovum.
actual failure rate: The average failure rate of a contraceptive. This takes into account not only actual failure of the device, but also human error and non-use.
adolescence: The stage of development that occurs during puberty.
adrenogenital syndrome: Also known as congenital adrenal hyperplasia. A genetic condition in which a female is born with genitals that look like a male's due to an abnormally functioning adrenal gland.
adultery: Sex between a married person and a person other than their spouse.
afterbirth: The placenta and amniotic sac, which is expelled after the infant during childbirth.
agape: A Greek word meaning altruistic love.
age of consent: The age at which a person is deemed legally capable of giving consent to sexual interactions.
AIDS: Acronym for acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
AIDS dementia: Infection of the brain by HIV, resulting in the impairment of mental functioning, as well as changes in both mood and behavior.
alpha-feto protein screening: A blood test that helps determine the existence of neural tube defects.
alveoli: Glands that produce milk in the female breast.
ambisexual: A more contemporary term for bisexual.
amenorrhea: The absence of menstruation.
amniocentesis: A diagnostic procedure in which amniotic fluid is withdrawn by needle from the uterus of a pregnant woman. The fluid and fetal cells are then analyzed for chromosome defects.
amniotic fluid: The fluid within the amniotic sac that surrounds the embryo or fetus.
amniotic sac: The pouch that contains the amniotic fluid.
amyl nitrate: A drug that is inhaled to prolong or intensify orgasm. Its use is potentially very dangerous, and is now illegal to sell in many states.
anal intercourse: Sexual behavior in which one person's penis is inserted into another's anus.
analingus: Stimulation of the anus with mouth and tongue.
anaphrodisiac: A substance that decreases sexual desire.
anatomical sex: The apparent gender of an individual based on the appearance of sexual organs.
androgens: The "male" sex hormones. Actually produced by women as well (though in smaller quantities and with little absorbtion).
androgen replacement therapy: The administration of testosterone. This is done to increase sex drive in men with androgen deficiencies.
androgen-insensitivity syndrome: A condition in which a male is born with testes but is unable to absorb testosterone As a result, his body tends toward a female appearance.
androgyny: Possessing both masculine and feminine characteristics.
anorexia nervosa: An eating disorder in which the individual engages in extreme behaviors to remain very thin.
anorexic: A person with anorexia.
anorgasmia: A sexual dysfunction in which an individual is unable to have orgasms. More prevalent in women.
antigay prejudice: Negative attitudes and behaviors toward homosexuals.
anus: The opening of the rectum.
Apgar score: A medical rating of a newborn's condition based on heart rate, respiration, color, reflexes, and muscle tone.
aphrodisiac: A substance that is alleged to increase sexual desire.
areola: The ring of darkened skin around the nipple of the breast.
artificial insemination: Placing semen into a woman's vagina or uterus by a means other that intercourse for the purpose of inducing pregnancy.
asexual: Without sexual feelings, desires or qualities.
asphyxophilia: A sexual preference for activities that involve oxygen deprivation.
ass: Slang expression for buttocks.
asshole: Slang expression for anus.
assigned gender: The gender that one is ascribed by others, irregardless of genetic or anatomical gender.
asymptomatic: Having no symptoms.
atypical sexual behavior: Sexual activity that is not one of the more common activities.
autoerotic asphyxia: A form of sexual behavior in which the individual masturbates while depriving him or herself of oxygen through hanging, strangulation, or other means. This activity is incredibly dangerous and causes many inadvertent deaths each year.
autoeroticism: Sexual behavior that is done by oneself such as masturbation.
axillary hair: Armpit hair.
axillary intercourse: A sexual variation in which a man thrusts his penis in the armpit of his partner.

B&D: An acronym for bondage and discipline.
bacterial vaginosis: A vaginal infection caused by the bacterium Gardnerella vaginalis.
bag: Slang term for scrotum
balls: Slang term for testicles.
Barr body: An inactivated X chromosome that appears as a small, black dot in the cells of genetic females, distinguishing them from male cells.
Bartholin's glands: Two tiny ducts located on either side of the vaginal entrance. They secrete a small amount of fluid during sexual arousal, but their exact purpose is unclear.
basal body temperature (BBT) method: A method of fertility awareness that is based on a woman's morning body temperature.
behavior therapy: A school of therapy based on learning theory that focuses on observable behavior and not the unconscious.
benign prostatic hypertrophy: Enlargement of the prostate gland. This is a very common condition in older men.
berdache: A term used in some cultures for a male who assumes female dress and gender role. In these cultures, these individuals are often thought to be a third gender and have special powers.
bestiality: Sexual contact with animals; also known as zoophilia.
birth canal: Another term for the vagina; often used when referring to labor and birth.
birth control: The regulation of conception, pregnancy, and/or birth.
bisexuality: A sexual orientation in which one feels attracted to both males and females.
blastocyst: A small mass of cells that results after several days of cell division by a fertilized egg.
blow job: Unusual slang term for fellatio (which usually does not involve "blow[ing].")
blue balls: Slang expression for pain in the groinal area due to prolonged vasocongestion.
body fluids: Blood, semen, vaginal secretions, urine, feces, saliva and/or tears.

C-section: Abbreviation for cesarean section.
calendar method: A contraceptive method based on calculating "safe" days based on a formula involving a woman's longest and shortest periods.
call girl: A high-priced prostitute who usually works outcall from a home or office as opposed to getting customers on the street or at a brothel.
candida albicans: The fungus that causes candidiasis, otherwise known as a yeast infection.
candidiasis: A yeast infection caused by the fungus candida albicans.
cannula: A tube inserted into the body through which fluids and tissue can be removed. These are often used during abortions and other gynecological procedures.
carpopedal spasm: A contraction of the hands or feet which occurs during orgasm.
castration: The removal of the testes or ovaries. In popular use, also refers to the amputation of the penis.
celibate: Unmarried, or as more popularly used, someone who does not engage in sexual activity.
cervical cap: A small, rubber, contraceptive barrier device that fits over the cervix. It is smaller than the diaphragm and is held in place by suction.
cervical dysplasia: A disease of the membrane that covers the cervix. It is often considered to be pre-cancerous and should be treated.
cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: A disease of the membrane that covers the cervix. It is often considered to be pre-cancerous and should be treated.
cervix: The tapered, lower end of the uterus that opens into the vagina.
cesarean section: Delivery of a baby through a surgical incision in the abdominal wall. Also known as C-section.
chancre: A red, painless sore that is an early symptom of syphilis.
chancroid: A painful sore on the penis that is caused by the STD bacterium Hemophilus ducreyi.
chastity: Sexual abstinence.
chemical castration: Using drugs to reduce or eliminate a man's sexual impulses.
cherry: Slang expression for the hymen.
child-free marriage: A marriage in which the couple have chosen not to have children.
chlamydia: An infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Despite being one of the most common STDs in women, it is often asymptomatic.
chorionic-villi sampling: A medical procedure in which embryonic cells are removed from the tissue surrounding the fetus and then analyzed for evidence of genetic defects.
cilia: Tiny hairlike fibers that line the fallopian tubes and help move the oocyte along.
circle jerk: Slang term for male group masturbation (usually referring to a practice of adolescent males).
circumcision: The surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis, or, in some cultures, the clitoral hood, clitoris and/or labia.
clap: A slang term for gonorrhea.
climacteric: An older term for menopause.
climax: Orgasm.
clit: Slang expression for the clitoris.
clitoral hood: The fold of skin covering the clitoris.

conceptus: The product of conception; a medical catch-all term for the zygote, fetus, or embryo.
condom: A sheath that is placed over the erect penis to protect against pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
congenital adrenal hyperplasia: A genetic condition in which a female is born with genitals that look like a male's due to an abnormally functioning adrenal gland.
congestive prostatitis: An inflammation of the prostate gland thought to be caused by infrequent ejaculation.
contraception: The prevention of conception by the use of birth control devices or agents.
contraceptive film: A small square of spermicide that is inserted into the vagina where it dissolves and helps protect against pregnancy.
contraceptive foam: A spermicidal foam that is inserted into the vagina with an applicator prior to intercourse where it helps protect against pregnancy.
contraceptive sponge: A polyurethane sponge inserted inside the vagina that blocks the opening of the cervix and releases a spermicide thereby helping to protect against unintentional pregnancy.
contraceptive suppository: A small capsule of spermicide that is inserted into the vagina prior to intercourse where it dissolves and helps protect against pregnancy.
contraceptive: Any method, drug, or device that helps prevent conception.
coprophilia: A sexual variation in which arousal is associated with activities involving feces.
copulation: Vaginal intercourse.
corona: The sensitive rim of tissue between the glans and the shaft of the penis.
corpora cavernosa: The hollow chambers in the shaft of the penis or clitoris that fill with blood during sexual arousal, causing erection.
corpus luteum: The cell mass that remains after a follicle has released an egg. After releasing the egg, it secretes both progesterone and estrogen.
corpus spongiosum: A column of erectile tissue that runs the length of the penis and encloses the urethra.
couvade: The experiencing of the symptoms of pregnancy and labor by a male. A form of sympathetic pregnancy practiced in some cultures.
covert sensitization: A form of aversion therapy in which negative thoughts are used to punish and therefore rid someone of unacceptable thoughts or behaviors.
Cowper's glands: A pair of structures below the prostate gland that secrete a clear alkaline fluid into the urethra prior to ejaculation. Also known as bulbourethral glands.
crabs: Slang term for Pediculosis pubis or pubic lice.
cramps: Painful menstruation known clinically as dysmenorrhea.
cremaster: A muscle within the scrotal sac that causes the testes to descend and/or elevate based on temperature.
cross-dressing: Wearing the clothing of the opposite sex.
crura: The internal branches of the clitoral or penile shaft.
cryptorchidism: A medical condition in which one or both testes have not descended properly.
culdoscopy: A form of female sterilization/tubal ligation in which the incision is made through the back of the vagina thereby avoiding an external scar.
cultural relativity: The perspective that the appropriateness of any behavior must be evaluated based on the time and culture it occurs in.

cunnilingus: Oral stimulation of the female genitals for sexual purposes.
cunt: Slang term for vagina.
curette: A scooplike medical instrument used for scraping body tissues; often used during abortions or other gynecological procedures.

dartos: A smooth muscle in the scrotum that causes the surface to wrinkle when it contracts.
deep throat: Slang term for a type of oral sex in which a man’s partner is able to overcome his or her gag-reflex and allow the penis to go deeply into their mouth, and sometimes actually down their throat.
defloration: An old term referring to the loss of virginity from the rupture of a virgin's hymen, through intercourse or other means.
delayed ejaculation: A sexual dysfunction characterized by the male's difficulties with ejaculating during intercourse.
Depo-Provera: A drug containing a long-acting synthetic hormones (medroxyprogesterone acetate); used as an injectable form of birth control in women, and as a form of chemical castration in men.

detumescence: The return of an erect penis to its flaccid state.
deviant sexual behavior: Sexual behavior that diverges from the norm.
DHT deficiency: A genetic disorder in which a male is unable to convert testosterone into the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is required for the normal development of external male genitals and these individuals are usually identified as girls at birth, but at adolescence begin to develop male genitals.
diaphragm: A saucer-shaped rubber contraceptive device that is filled with spermicide and inserted into the back of the vagina to block the cervical opening.

dilation and curettage (D&C): Dilation of the cervix followed by scraping of the interior of the uterus. Used as a form of abortion and to stop abnormal bleeding.
dilation and evacuation (D&E): An abortion method used rarely, and usually only in the second trimester; the conceptus is crushed and the contents of the uterus are then extracted through a vacuum curette.
dilation: Expansion of the cervix during labor or by the use of dilating rods during medical procedures.
dilitation: Expansion of the cervix by the use of dilating rods during medical procedures
dildo: A device used for sexual stimulation by insertion into the vagina or anus that is usually in the overall shape of a phallus.
domination and submission (D&S): Sexual arousal derived from the acting out of sexual fantasies in which one person dominates while the other submits.
dominatrix: In bondage and discipline, a woman who specializes in "disciplining" a submissive partner.

eating (out): Slang term for cunnilingus.
eclampsia: A severe form of toxemia that can occur in late pregnancy, leading to convulsions and coma in pregnant woman.
ectopic pregnancy: A pregnancy that occurs when a fertilized egg implants itself somewhere outside the uterus. In most cases, the site of implantation is a fallopian tube, in which case the condition is known as a tubal pregnancy.
effacement: The thinning out of the cervix during labor and childbirth.
effeminate: Having feminine qualities.
ejaculate: To have an orgasm with expulsion of seminal fluid from the penis. Also used as an alternative term for the fluid itself (semen).
ejaculation: The expulsion of seminal fluid from the penis, usually during orgasm.
ejaculatory duct: One of the two passageways that carries semen from the prostate gland to the urethra.
ejaculatory inevitability: In males, the point in the sexual response cycle at which a man no longer has control over whether he will ejaculate or not. Once this point is past, a man will ejaculate in a matter of seconds, even if all stimulation is ceased.
Electra complex: In psychoanalytic theory, the female child's erotic desire for the father and simultaneous fear of the mother. It is the female analog to the Oedipal complex.
embryo: The unborn human organism from the second to about the eighth week of pregnancy.
embryo transfer: A technique used with infertile couples in which a fertilized, developing egg is transferred from the uterus of one woman to that of another woman.
emission: The first stage of ejaculation, in which sperm and semen are propelled into the urethral bulb.
endometriosis: A disease caused by cells from the uterine lining spreading and growing in parts of the body other than the uterus, such as the fallopian tubes.
endometrium: The inner lining of the uterus; part of which is shed during menstruation.
engagement: The repositioning of the fetus into a lower position in the mother's abdominal cavity that occurs when its head is past her pelvic bone.
epididymis: The tightly coiled tubules, attached to the top of the testes, where sperm matures and is stored.
epididymitis: Inflammation of the epididymis.
episiotomy: An incision made during childbirth to enlarge the vaginal opening. The incision is usually made at the base of the vaginal opening and serves to help prevent tearing of the perineal and anal tissues.
erectile dysfunction: A sexual dysfunction characterized by the inability to have or maintain an erection despite adequate stimulation and interest. Often referred to commonly as impotence.
erection: The enlargement and hardening of the penis due to vasocongestion that occurs during sexual arousal in the male.
erogenous zone: Any area of the body that is especially sensitive to sexual stimulation and touching.
eros: The Greeks' term for passionate or erotic love.
erotic aid: A device, such as a vibrator or dildo, designed to enhance sexual responsiveness.
erotica: Sexually oriented material that is not considered "pornographic" to the viewer.
erotophilia: A positive emotional response to sexuality.
erotophobia: A negative emotional response to sexuality, especially guilt, fear and shame.
estradiol: The major natural estrogen.
estrogen: The principal female hormone, secreted by the ovaries, testes, and placenta.
estrogens: The "female" sex hormones; also produced in smaller quantities (and with less absorbtion) in males.
estrus: The period of ovulation and sexual activity in nonhuman female mammals; commonly referred to as being "in heat."
eunuch: A castrated male.
exhibitionism: A paraphilia characterized by getting sexual gratification from exposing the genitals to an (often unwilling) observer.
expectant: Pregnant.
expulsion: The second stage of ejaculation, characterized by contractions of the urethra, prostate, and muscles at the base of the penis, causing semen to spurt from the penis.
extramarital sex: Sexual activity by a married person with someone other than her or his spouse.

fallopian tube: One of the two tubes extending from the ovary to the uterus through which eggs are transported.
fag: Pejorative, slang term for a homosexual.
fellatio: Oral stimulation of the male genitals.
female circumcision: The surgical removal of the clitoris and all or part of the labia. Also known as clitoridectomy.
female condom: A soda-can-shaped pouch that is placed inside the vagina to line the vaginal walls for prevention of pregnancy and disease.
femme: A lesbian who exhibits stereotypically feminine traits.
fertility awareness: One of the contraceptive methods that is based on a woman being able to predict her reproductive cycle, including calendar (rhythm), basal body temperature (BBT), mucus, and symptothermal methods.
fertilization: The union of sperm and egg, resulting in conception.
fetal alcohol syndrome: A condition that effects infants born to alcoholic mothers.
fetishes: Obtaining sexual excitement primarily or exclusively from an inanimate object or a particular part of the body.
fetishism: Obtaining sexual excitement primarily or exclusively from an inanimate object or a particular part of the body.
fetishistic transvestism: A paraphilia in which a man becomes sexually excited by cross-dressing. This is in contrast to non-fetishistic transvestism, in which the motivation is not sexual excitement.
fetus: The human unborn organism from the ninth week up until birth.
fibroadenoma: A normally harmless, movable growth in the breast of young women.
fibrocystic disease: A common and usually harmless breast condition.
fimbriae: The fingerlike projections at the end of the fallopian tube extending towards the ovary.
fingering: Slang term for stimulation of a woman’s genitals with the fingers.

fitness: In evolutionary theory, an individual's reproductive success.

follicular phase: The phase of the menstrual cycle during which a follicle matures.
foreplay: A term used to refer to sexual activities other than intercourse. The term comes from the view that some individuals hold that all activities of a sexual nature are merely designed to lead up to intercourse.
foreskin: The sheath of skin covering the tip of the penis; often removed during circumcision.
fornication: Sexual intercourse between two unmarried people.
frenulum: A highly sensitive area of skin on the underside of the penis, where the glans meets the body of the penis.
frigidity: No longer used term that refers to a lack of sexual response in a woman.
frotteurism: A paraphilia characterized by obtaining sexual excitement from touching or rubbing one's body against others without their consent.

gamete: A generic term for a sex cell; an ovum or sperm.
gamete intra-fallopian transfer (GIFT): A procedure for infertile couples in which sperm and eggs are collected and then inserted together into the woman's fallopian tube.
gardnerella vaginalis: The bacterium that is the most common cause of bacterial vaginosis. It also refers to the infection itself, which causes a thin, smelly discharge in both men and women.
gay-bashing: Violence against gay men or lesbians because of their orientation.
gender: The characteristics associated with being a male or a female; as distinguished from the term "sex" which is more ambiguous. Also sometimes used to merely refer to the state of being either male or female.
gender difference: Any difference between males and females.
gender dysphoria: Dissatisfaction with one's gender. In extreme cases, this condition is known as transsexualism, in which a person desires to be the other gender.
gender identity: The gender one feels himself or herself to be, whether physiologically male or female.
gender role: The role a person is expected to perform as a result of being male or female in a particular culture; as distinguished from the term "sex role" which is more ambiguous.
gender stereotype: An overgeneralized belief about the characteristics of a person based simply on their gender.
gender-role socialization: The ways in which children are taught to behave in ways considered appropriate by others for their gender.
genetic sex: The differentiation of males and females based upon chromosomal and hormonal differences.
genital warts: An STD caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) that causes warts to appear on the genitals.
genitals: The reproductive and sexual organs of males and females. Also sometimes known as genitalia.
gestation: The entire time of pregnancy — from conception to birth.
gestational diabetes: A medical condition in which a pregnant woman develops a form of diabetes due to the pregnancy.
getting laid: Slang term for having sex.
getting off: Slang term for having an orgasm; usually used in reference to a male.
GIFT: Acronym for gamete intrafallopian transfer.
gigolo: A male prostitute.
giving head: Slang term for fellatio.
glans clitoris: The sensitive tip of the clitoris.

iniguinal canal: The passageway in the male that leads from the abdomen to the scrotum through which the testes usually descend shortly before birth. It is a frequent site of hernias.

Mullerian ducts: In the embryo, a pair of ducts that eventually develop into the internal female reproductive system if the fetus is genetically female.
Mullerian-inhibiting substance: A hormone secreted by the testes in a genetically male fetus that acts to inhibits the growth and development of the Mullerian-duct system.
multiparous: A woman who has had more than one baby.

urethritis: Inflammation of the urethra.
urophilia (or urolagnia): A sexual variation in which the person derives sexual excitement from urine or urination. Such activities are often referred to as "water sports."
uterine cycle: Another term for menstrual cycle.
